Bluebell & the Union 10 celebrations

On the 10th anniversary of the re-opening of the Union Canal from Edinburgh to Falkirk, "Bluebell" took part in a flotilla of boats travelling from Edinburgh to Falkirk over the weekend of 25/26 September 2010.

The flotilla set out from Edinburgh Quay at 8am on Saturday 25th October, aiming to get to Linlithgow by Saturday evening.
On Sunday 26th the flotilla continued to Brightons, at the top of the Falkirk wheel.

Bluebell had the honour of leading the flotilla from the Almond Aquaduct to Winchburgh on Saturday. We had a piper (John Hughes) on the Bows and she was lined with garlands and decorations. We gave her a fresh coat of paint on Saturday 11th September to help her look good for the event. The weather was beautiful. The sun was out and the wind stayed light.

Bridge 19-40 Canal Society

The Bridge 19-40 Canal Society exists to encourage the people living in the communities alongside our patch of canal to take an interest in the canal and help maintain it as a pleasant amenity.

The Society is a non-profit organisation supported by donations, volunteers and good will. Please help support our activities and consider joining in. With support from the local community, we can continue to promote our local canals.

We focus on the stretch of the Union Canal between Bridge 19 (Just east of the M8), to Bridge 40 (Just west of Philpstoun), which is how the society gets its name. However our main passenger operations run from Port Buchan, just off West Main Street in Broxburn.

You can Hire bluebell by the hour for events and parties. Please contact Ann for details (See below).

Narrow Boat "Bluebell"

Our main boat is Bluebell, a narrow boat suitable for most canal networks.
Bluebell is 35 feet long, 6 feet 10 inches wide and has approximately 2 feet draft. This is a standard Narrow Boat size.
She is powered by a Lister SR2 (13BHP@2000RPM) diesel engine that has spent a bit of its time beneath the water. It was seized when we acquired Bluebell and the mechanical wizards in the society have worked magic to make her into a reliable, efficient engine again.
We obtained Bluebell in a dilapidated state. It had been sunk and vandalised. It has taken many hours of work to get her operational again.
The pictures to the left show how she has been rebuilt by society members to the fully restored and running state she is in today, with canopies now fitted to the front and rear.

Hire Bluebell

You can hire our boats and crew for very reasonable hourly rates. Bluebell will carry up to 12 passengers and we cater for birthday parties and other family celebrations. Contact Ann for details.

The Canal

You can read all about the Union Canal on a larger scale, by following some of the links to the left, under the heading "Canals in Scotland". For the purposes of this brief description, I'll focus on our patch of the canal between Bridge 19, which is a bridge carrying farm traffic over the canal just West of the magnificent Almond aqueduct, to Bridge 40 which carries road traffic over the canal.

Bridge 19 is about 10.5 miles from Edinburgh Quay (regarded as the start of the canal), and Bridge 40 is 17.3 miles from Edinburgh Quay, which gives the Bridge 19-40 Canal Society around 7 miles of canal to look after.

Broxburn
